2408 Cesca Chair Rework

salvaged furniture rework

Salvaged Cesca chair frames reworked into a one-of-a-kind set of dining chairs.

Made from reclaimed steel frames, salvaged hot-rolled steel plate, birch plywood and reclaimed spotted gum.

Kristen came across a mismatched set of replica Marcel Breuer ‘Cesca’ chairs on Marketplace.

Having wanted to design and make a tube steel chair for years, the frames offered an opportunity to test materials and ideas without investing in tube bending for a prototype.

The design process began in 2024 and was revisited intermittently over the following two years before arriving at the current iteration.

Heavily patinaed, slender steel elements interact with near-black flexible plywood to create a chair that appears hard and uncompromisingly modern, but flexes and contours to the body.

While retaining the base geometry of the Cesca, the reworked chair is a substantial departure from the original in both material and form.
